1. Focus on important states first. That is those that give a lot of points or in primaries mode the state coming up next (since winning a state gives you a bonus to Enthusiasm for all states AKA turnout).
2. Pay attention to state issues scores for both you and the other candidates (the nice thing it tell you what the scores are) and focus on the ones that you can get a lead on with a single speech/ad.
You need to adjust your play style to the characters stats. For Trump that means focusing more on Speeches over Ads.
Lastly if you still having trouble try dropping the difficulty.
Political Machine can be anything people may want!
Going to what OP was saying. It would help to know what difficulty you are playing. But there are some general wiki guide sources being set-up that cover some of his strengths as a character.

Some of the general strengths include his deck (if you play with Cards enabled), and powerful issue scores and stamina to cover the map. Placing down enthusiasm HQs may be one of your best bets alongside with some ads to shore up red and competitive states to prevent them from going towards your opponent.
But once you spend the first part of the game stacking your ground game operations to get them up and running, you can expect to outrun most of your opponents in speeches, issues, and stamina.
If you need any more help or pointers, let us know! Sharing game results is helpful too to let us know how it went down in the process (maps, and perhaps issues!).
Additionally the overlays are helpful. There is even a strategy one to game out your path to victory. They can be seen in the top left with the cool little map icon next to the settings!
Same. I'm refunding. Why in primaries do the other candidates win states? What is the threshold that allow them to win delegates? None of this is explained.
This one stumped even me, but it's definitely not as evident as presidential elections right now.
The delegates are a winner-take-all system currently. Although I personally think proportional would be really great!
