Cant host a game in a LAN

Has anyone else been succeful in hosting a game at home with a group of friends So far all attempts have failed at letting other players in the same network connect. Any advice would be appreciated.

Me and a buddy can connect to the same game from the same LAN, but it's required that a friend outside of my network host the game itself. So if I host a game or my friend hosts a game, we can't play together. However, if my buddy two miles away hosts a game, we can all connect just fine.

That only worked once for me and my wife....apparently they are too small to create proper network code for thier game. 30 days later and we still can't play with each other, which means the games sits collecting dust.
