Yes he sure indeed is a main character alright. He is integral not only to the Sky games, but also to the Crossbell games and the Cold Steel games as well, which are games that he returns in.
Although they write him as if he's a totally different character in the Cold Steel games which bears little to no resemblance to how he is characterized in the Sky games. But he is still "supposed" to be the same character.
This point is true. Olivier is just one example of that, but he's not the only one. All of the LOH Trails games have similar jokes, not just the Sky games. Crossbell and Cold Steel also have a lot of jokes like that too.
Most of all, you shouldn't take things for their face value, I know that Olivier likes to see the people's reactions to his façade, but even at this point it's pretty obvious that he is up to something, even if we don't know yet if he is friend or foe.
Of course he IS a flighty flirt, all the better to keep him out of Cedric's way. You do remember that he is older than Cedric so he really has a case to take over his "family business" if people wanted to create a faction, hence his cultivated persona, but he's not really as incompetent as he pretends to be. Case in point as how he defused the Ruan riot or how he derailed Osborne's plans in SC.
The one that really threw me off was Lecter.
It's pretty well known that Trails in the Sky was translated very.. uhm.. freely. In other words, it heavily changed and warped characterization. I only played the first chapter of this with the voice mod, because I got curious, and the translation is not even remotely close to the original intention of the writer(s). Especially Joshua was heavily changed, maybe to make things more "funny". I don't know. Wouldn't be surprised if other characters are also hit.
It might not be quite on working designs level, but it sure is a very different experience from the original.
