Translation project
In order to share this awesome game with the french speaking people, I decided to translate it into french. But I have a big problem, I don't know in which files are located the dialogues and which tools I should use to succeed.
Please help, thanks all.

That's gonna be one giant translation project, you better prepare a team if anything.

i hope you know what your getting yourself into, this is going to be one giant project that may take years to finish, i hope your ready for that type of commitment.

I'm french, and seriously, I'd say just give up.

The public that is interested by this game generally already have a good grasp of english, so it's not that useful.
There will be some things lost again in the translations since I assume you'll go from the english script and not the original.
The amount of work was big enough to drive the Xseed translators mad.

You find most of the texts in ED6_DT01 file
But text lie in the binary script files (*._SN) and there are no utilites to work with them.

I check the Screenshots page every now and then, and I'm really impressed by your work. Do you have some people helping you with the project, or do you just work alone?

A reminder for developers
Not sure if this game can be translated in its current state but here is a note for the developers:

It's important today to use an easily editable format for the string files (e.g. simple plain XML UTF-8 text files, adopted by other successful games like Divinity:Original Sin). Hard-coding everything in the exe or custom data files should be a deprecable practice, blocking any translation's hope. Especially for small budget software houses, the fan community can really help providing other languages translations or corrections at virtually no cost.

Keep in mind the original developers were 12 years ago before a lot of this stuff got standardized, so reminders won't do them much good :P You'd have to ask XSeed if Falcom's gotten any better about it in more recent stuff like Ys 7/Celceta.

Also XSeed went through hell not just to translate the text, but they had to poke a lot further into the code than you'd expect to get that text to display properly. Trails was kind of a Frankenstein of coding that ended up running on duct tape and the grace of God and following some of the behind-the-scenes blog posts XSeed put out during SC localization was...oy vey.

As much as I love to see fan translation projects, you're probably going to have less trouble teaching English and/or Japanese to the entire population of France than doing another localization of this game >_<

Actually, I love translating stuffs : it's more like a hobbit.
I know it won't be perfect but if I can do the first chapter, it may bring motivation to other people to join my project.
Any help is still welcomed :)

Try to learn Japanese and translate from Japanese to any western language.

We need people who are able to do that, FAR MORE, than any other language.

Trails in the Sky was created a long time ago, son (first released in 2004 for Windows 98 I believe, if not Windows XP). There is nothing XSeed can do, other than localize the product. Unless Nihon Falcom is interested in doing an HD reboot (I hightly doubt it, given that they're already knee deep in other project developments and don't have resource to spare - they already out with a new Ys title, came out with a title in the Xanadu series last year, and are rumored to be working on Sen no Kiseki/Trails of Cold Steel 3)

There is well over a million characters to translate (from Japanese) in FC alone, and the nuances of the Japanese language makes it doubly difficult. What the Japanese could achieve in 3 or 4 characters to convey an expression, it may take a sentence of a dozen words or more in English. Nevermind the other languages and how that would fare. I understand it's way more easier to translate from Japanese into Chinese or Korean, but that's just second-hand hearsay, and I don't have personal experience in that.
