I don't actually know the technical details of what it is, though.
Hardware Vertex Shading: Leaving that on caused black boxes to appear in the background of my game, and turning it off fixed it. I didn't really notice any graphical differences btw leaving it on and off
V-sync: It forces the game to run at the same fps as your screen's native fps, i.e. 60 for most screens. If your graphics card can't run the game at 60fps, it doesn't do anything. But since this is a game originally made in 2004, most can run this game at higher than 60, so it's a good idea to leave it on in order to protect your graphics card.
Don't know anything about the other two.
I turned it off and that fixed the problem.
