But yeah, give it a try.
And so I picked this up, when I saw it on sale awhile back. Yes, as others say, the game's overall plot takes awhile to pick up, and it seems a lot of people feel they 'drag' through the early portion of the game. However, personally, loving character depth and interaction/growth, I actually loved the charm of this game from the get-go. And it only enhanced that charm once the plot picked up, all the way to the end, as the characters continued to grow and react.
Plus it's pretty nice there's a sequel in the works for Steam release that picks up exactly where this left off...that I'm dying to see and will buy the moment I see it. Good luck; hopefully this game can fill that missing niche for you as well.
Second Chapter can't come soon enough!
But this game - well, this game has very much emphasis on dialogue and character progression in terms of story and interactions. When you get to cutscenes (not anime ones or anything, just dialogue exchange), which are many, you will spend upwards of 15 minutes or more reading text, walking to the next guy, and reading more text, which makes this game feel like an interactive book with turn-based fights strewn throughout. If you like character progression and interactions, and character building, this game is amazing. If you don't like reading, you will find it slow more than likely and difficult to get into. I personally loved it, and I liked every character in it which can't be said about many other games.
I will say however that this game is more of a prologue to the real masterpiece which is SC, second chapter. In that game the story really takes off and I can almost guarantee you will love it. That alone makes this one worth playing.
Well the plot compares to FF VI and beats it in many areas for sure but let's keep things in proportions...
Yes, the plot takes a while to get going, but that's a feature not a bug. ;)
(I'm 36 and very much relate to the OP.)
IBJamon
Uh, not sure if serious and I guess it takes all sorts, but I couldn't disagree more. Xenoblade to me was the best post 2000 JRPG by a long shot. I love the old ones like the OP and most in the last 15 years just didn't really do it for me but Xenoblade gave me that old feeling again I got with those old JRPGs.
This game seems decent enough but drags early on so I keep getting distracted and putting it away for a while then having to make myself go back to it. It's one of the better JRPGs I've played recently but then again I don't like most modern ones so I suppose that's not saying much. For me it's no Xenoblade though. At least not yet.
Oh and I did NOT just see someone diss DQ, ESPECIALLY not DQ5. DQ5 is one of the best RPGs EVER made. Even better than FF6 and CT (though I don't think FF6 is even the best FF. CT is wonderful though)
The characters are a lot more developed and you know their personality a lot better imo. The designs of the FF6 characters however are better.
The story is worse overall than FF6. But this game has much better dialogue and world building imo. The world just isn't as interesting.
The music is also a lot worse than FF6 or xenoblade, (or pretty much any FF game imo). It's a decent soundtrack.
That said, I prefer this over FF6 since it's not boring to play.
as far as the character's and story is concerned, it's a lot more grounded and less over the top compared to a lot of JRPG's
if you're a fan of SNES/PSX era JRPG's this is definitely worth your time
