Is this kamige?
Will this redefine my JRPG experience? Did this game change the face of JRPGs forever? Will I ever be able to play another video game again?

Depends. Its graphics, gameplay and battle aren't what you'd call revolutionary. What it does better than any other series is world-building. Every NPC in every town has his/her own name and dialogue that changes after every major event. There's lots of little miniplots going on in the background while you're busy doing your thing. Compared to Trails' world, many other RPG worlds seem shallow with townfolk that keeps saying "Welcome to our town" throughout the entire game.

Trails is far from revolutionary. It sticks with what works and does it well. It also has lots of endearing and well-defined characters, both player characters and NPCs. It's basically a throwback to the golden age of console RPGs and closely resembles games like Lunar and Grandia.
What's "kamige"?

The opposite of kusoge, I can only assume. Where kusoge is "♥♥♥♥♥♥ game", kamige must be "godly game".

What does kusoge mean?
can u not Jul 25, 2014 @ 2:36pm
kusoge = bad game (i.e kuso = ♥♥♥♥/bad, ge is a shorthand for gemu = game)

kamige is basically what hitoshura said, a game that most people agree is incredibly good in the medium that it is in. as for the topic, i wouldn't say that this game will change your perspective on JRPGs, but it is a very well done JRPG. and the rest of the series is incredibly good. they are all solid games imo.

Oh yeah, I probably should have made a relevant post. I haven't played the entire series because I don't know enough Japanese, but basically the first game's focus is very much on fleshing out the world, it's essentially a really long (and great!) prologue. One of my biggest gripes with RPGs is that NPCs are basically worthless, they never have anything interesting or relevant to say, but that is one of the things this game excels at. NPCs will either have story-relevant dialogue, or they'll have their own little substories that develop as you progress through the current chapter. The gameplay, while not especially unique, is quite solid. I have heard from many that the assessment of the first game as a "prologue" is quite accurate, and it helps set up the 2nd game quite well, which will have the real meat of the story. Then the third game supposedly acts as an epilogue for the series, which seems pretty unique. I really hope those who refuse to buy the game simply because the only voiced dialogue (battle dialogue) isn't in their precious Japanese don't much impact the sales of what may not necessarily be the finest individual games, as that will directly affect the release of one of the finest series' that has the chance to make it stateside in its entirety.

It is really important to know that with 3rd there is no way back anymore from the series. After this title you really need to keep going because you will keep getting new questions related to the plot. I have heard of some doors opened in 3rd not even being explained up to this date yet.
And i do not think the audience who refuses to buy this game because the dub isn't /that/ big, at least i never have felt that kind of group ever has been. Let's hope so. As i keep stalking these boards i do have a feeling this game will have a good start and when people finish this game they will have to play the second one to be satisfied.

Keep in mind that the story is slow burn. As in, the story doesn't really pick up until a fair bit into the game. But once it does, good lord.

It's absolutely worth playing if you don't mind slow starts.

I can say that this game has ruined me for other JRPGs to a degree. I now hunger for the detail to the characters and setting that Trails in the Sky provided, which most JRPGs come up short in.

And since some people mentioned it, this game does have it's own self contained plot and the main plot of it gets wrapped up nicely. It's just that in the ending in resolving one plot thread, it opens up new stuff that leaves you wanting the sequel now.
