Similar to Final Fantasy Tactics?
I can't quite tell the genre of the game. Is it similar to FFT or is it more of a Chrono Trigger?

The battle system uses a turn based grid system much like FFT.

However I will say that the game's charm doesn't come from its battles, but from the excellent storytelling, world building, and character development throughout the game. You spend roughly 50/50 amount of time in dungeons/battles vs. story.

Here's a video with a bit of gameplay from near the beginning of the game. As you can see, the gameplay is pretty standard RPG flair. The battle system has a grid based movement system but isn't strict like FFT. The focus is more on positioning relative to Movement ranges and AOEs. It is also a standard turn based system with the twist being that the Turn Order is malleable.

As for genre, it is RPG or if you want to further classify it a JRPG in the same vein as those of the PSX era.

It's a J-RPG, like Chrono Trigger.

It is not a T-RPG, and there's no class system. It has more in common with Lunar (which has a map you can move around on in battles) than Final Fantasy Tactics.

Yeah, definitely not a strategy RPG. It's just a normal turn based JRPG, with a grid based battlefield. I can see how you might think it's a strategy RPG from screenshots, but it doesn't play like one.

Thankfully. I can only take so much of games like FFT, or Disgaea.

Nope they use very different combats system, they look similar but CT is real time not Trails which has true turns and only a single option of half real time interrupt but hardly one you rush use when available.

I never enjoyed much CT combats because of the real time, Trails is quite different.

Well, we're talking about the game's genre. FF Tactics is a Tactical RPG. Chrono Trigger is a J-RPG. Trails in the Sky is also a J-RPG. As such, it's closer to Chrono Trigger than it is to FF Tactics.

Now, some people define J-RPGs by the fact that they have a clear separation between real time exploration and turn-based combat. I prefer to base my definition on how the combat is used, as a mean of narration (J-RPGs) or as a game-system of its own (T-RPGs and A-RPGs)

Ha ok, but seriously it's bizarre how Japan sticked to very precise genres, JRPG and TRPG with both setup on very different blueprints.
