Weird stutter issue.
So, as the title says, I am having a weird stutter issue. I DID look up the forums before similar issues and found some but no definitive fix for it. Let me explain wha is happening.

So, if I have the FPS limiter set to 60 and vsync on, I get a FPS of 60, rock solid. Problem is that i get these micro stutters every 1/4 of a second that is REALLY noticeable when walking/running. I CAN get rid of this issue by setting the FPS limiter to automatic but then a new issue appears where when I go to a new screen, it stutters HORRIBLY, as if it is loading up assets. After I walk the ENTIRE map, the stuttering seems to go away completely but it appears again if I go to a different map and also if I go back to a map that I had previously covered completly. Is there something I am missing here? I REALLY want to play this game but the stutter is EXCEPTIONALLY offputting while trying to play the game. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Set up a game profile in your vid card app. Google your vid card and see how to do it.

Its pretty simple

Turn off Vsync in game
open vid card app
make a game profile
set vsync on in vid card app

thats the short of it

Thanks for the quick reply Mikey. Sadly, this did not fix the issue. I thought about trying this before but did not believe it would work since the only real change would be me forcing vsync system wide with it turned off in the launch configurator. Thank you for the help though. Perhaps any other ideas?

DO not set it system wide - wont work. You should really set it up per game only.

Steam cloud has been known to cause micro stutters in other games, as well as the overlay.

Edit - do you have gsync monitor or other type of hardware?

Sometimes a stutter can be caused by a new driver that has a glitch that wasnt caught in QC testing.

Audio can very rarely cause this issue.

I am using a Sony 4k TV, model 900e, to play my games. This is the only game that has this kind of studder so, sadly, I am leaning on this being a software issue, not a hardware issue.

Many posts advise running this game on a much lower res than 4k. No wonder you see stuff others dont. Game engine was not made to display or run at that setup. Even the wrapper used to port this game forward cant do that.

What res and hz you trying to run?

I was trying to do 4k res but i also tried 1920x1080 and I had the same issue.

Running it on
1024x768x32 is optimal and you will have no issues at all. Do this in full screen mode.

I tried 1920x1080x32 as that is my monitor and had your isssues.

Hi,

Just tried that and the issue still persists, no matter the res i set it to. Also, set lower than 1920x1080p makes the screen shrink, even when set to full screen. I feel like there HAS to be something I am missing since I can get it to run smooth when set to automatic albiet with horrible frame skipping periodically, as stated in my original post.

You using Steam link to play on tele?

I dont own one but have seen reviews stating somthing similar from that. Wired vs wireless iirc.

Assuming you using wireless controller too? Have you tried a wired one?

I am using steam on my PC, no Steam link and using a hardwired xbox controller.

Not sure what other options I could change to try and fix this issue.

One last thing to look at.

Im using GoG version so dont know if its same for Steam.

I have 2 different exe in directory. 1 is DX8 and other is DX9. Which one you using?

going through the steam launcher, it gives you the option to use the DirectX 8 version because it defaults to the Direct X 9 version. I tried both versions, same issue on both.

Ahh well, got me for now.

Hard for me to help not having PC in front of me to play with stuff.

I will keep an eye out to see if anything else pops up that might help you.

Good luck

PS Is your device set to HAL or REF? HAL is Hardware Abstraction Layer and REF is software based rendering of the video. Hal is preferred but you can try either.

PSS - you on Win10? Seen alot of issues from that. Can try the compatability settings - set to XP or Win7. Hi DPI settings to 100% or disabled. Can try other settings from that tab also.

Mikey, ty for ALL your help. The reason it took so long for me to reply was because I managed to fix it and was troubleshooting the exact cause and narrowed it down finally. The problem was that I was unchecking "windowed mode". Keeping it checked does NOT put me in windowed mode at all, still puts me in full screen but with it checked, I have zero stutters. If anyone else is having a similar issue, give that a try.

Thanks again for the help Mikey!

P.S.

I am on Windows 10 so this may be why the Windowed Mode setting is not working. Just a thought.

Good to hear you got it working. Good game.

I am new to the series and am on my 1st playthough of game 1 of 6 for this series. Maybe by end of year will be done with all 6? haha
