What do you want in marketing?
I've been looking at whoever offers the best income rate, but I'm not sure if that's the best route to go.

I've been going Fan Conversion and Income Conversion myself.

Indie Marketing Gig, which gives +2 Fan Conversion, and has an option to add another +2 Fan Conversion. If I understand Fan Conversion correctly, it increases your ability to transform the audience into fans - who in turn can allow you to gather more Fan Power to activating other marketing abilities.

Basically, I am investing in Fan Conversion with the intent of being able to activate all marketing powers during the later seasons.

^ Pretty much this. I've been going for anything that increases income as well so I can buy equipment faster. I stay away from ANYTHING that lowers the amount of fans.

Fans are a great option for marketing, particulat because fans=your marketing power. When you have enough fans, you can activate multiple marketing bonuses at the same time.

More fans means more marketing bonuses you can use at once. I got real lucky with the 4th random bonus in season 2 for a particular marketer, so I had the default +35 fans, the bonus +36 fans from the random (for less fan power to turn it on than the +35), and +300 dollars per show to make the marketing pay for itself.

All turned on at the same time, because I had enough fans in the first place to do so.

As much as I am gushing about +Fans bonuses, basically pick the marketing service which has the one option you want most. You should always have enough fan power to turn on at least one option once you start hiring marketing people. Being able to turn on two, or even three at the same time just makes it even better.

You want money the most? Take the one offering money. You want better drop rates? Take that guy. Getting an early head start on Fans is still helpful though.

EDIT: I've only beat season 2, then heard about various lategame bugs. Maybe it's more important in later seasons or hard mode, but I have found the Audience bonuses to be useless compared to Fans (Direct and conversion) and money.

Double Edit: Don't forget, you can swap around what bonuses are turned on per show. If you are shooting an eppisode with a very low audience max, you could swap over to something else. Then back to + conversion when you are doing a show with 4,000 max audience instead of 1,500.

I just got to the next season, and found the Fan's R Us marketers. Unlike the other firms that I have seen so far, this one increases your mecha's health. That is good, considering that I am stuck with the type-a parts, due to a bug. Need all the health that I can get for beating down the upsized bosses.

There is also another firm that has even better abilities for converting fans. I am figuring that I will use that firm for all of the non-mecha episodes, then switch over to Fan's R Us for mecha ones.

I just finished season 5 earlier and it seems like there are a lot more firms with abilities like that as you get further. I've still been sticking with whatever provides the most money, although I'm running out of things to buy now.
