Each button has to control two only gates, should be no control intersection between Buttons 1 & 2
So it must lead us to a solution where:
- all 4 bottom lights on the wiring shield must be ON
- in the upper section of the shield there must be configuration which includes 2 gates connected to Button 1 (definitely you want one of them to be the only working gate) and other 2 gates connected to Button 2 (which is not working anyway but so are the gates)
- whether the combination correct or not, you may check by returning to buttons - Button 1 will have a red light on.
A little spoiler to begin with: one of the gates (for current puzzle scheme) hardwired to one of the buttons .
