If you talk about Rep+, multiplayer is based on the save file of the player with the least advanced savefile.
If the least advanced player already has T samson, you will find a shopkeeper in the closet.

BRO SERIOUSLY ????
Do you understand what i said before answering ? Can't you give more informations when you answer (how many secrets each of you has, who has the most secrets....) ?????
Take your time to make some searches, understanding what ppl say and asking your friend gosh.....

"The least advanced savefile" = the savefile of the player with less secrets

If your friend has 400 secrets and T samson, you only 200 and not T samson = the game will play with the unlocks and items from the dude with 200 secrets and you can unlock T samson

If your friend has 400 secrets and not T samson, you only 200 and T samson = you can't unlock T samson for both of you since it's already unlocked in the savefile with less unlocks.

If both of you have T samson, no problem, if none of you has it, no problem too.

Invert "you" and "your friend" in the sentences above, it doesn't matter.

You keep going around saying this, but how do you actually know that this is how it works? Is it in the luascript somewhere?
It's obvious when it comes to major progression, but what about unlocks that the player with less progression has, but not the player with more? Would it randomly choose between our files if we both had the same amount of secrets unlocked?
Like if I didn't have Rock Bottom unlocked, but a player with less secrets completed did, would it still show up and be added to my collection if I picked it up?

I have no idea about the tainted unlocks. I'm not able to test because the only save I have that's able to has all of the tainted characters already unlocked. I imagine it works weird in multiplayer, because the game checks to see if all the game states are the same like every frame. The character on the floor being different could cause desyncs.
I figure it doesn't hurt to throw ideas out there. Maybe it depends on who the host is? Maybe it depends on who uses the key to open the red door? Or who enters the room first?

Open beta from December 2023, 1.9.1 Repentance Patch. Link, NOTES at bottom page :
https://bindingofisaacrebirth.wiki.gg/wiki/Online_(open_beta)
None of the following updates (1.9.2-1.9.7.8) changed that so it's still here. Exceptions exists, but it's not mentionned anywhere so what works for 99% of the game can works here.

As for the other problem, spaghetti code, unknown / not enough documented unlock method for Multiplayer or exceptions for some characters, like per player basis for the Lost's Holy Mantle.
The basic assumption of what i said works for 99% of the game so a generalisation was far better than crying to BUG, BUG everywhere like everypost in this forum from ppl that don't gives any details and forget to read or understand the basics.

This means that if one player is missing an unlock, then all players will be missing that unlock.
Cheers, this answered my question. I was asking something similar on here close to the release and never got an answer, so I'm glad to finally know for sure.

You don't even deserve clown awards being so rude with no reason, honestly reading you is a pain so I stopped mid sentence. OP stated his issue clearly leaving the cue of his friend obviously having less progress than him and yet you didn't answer properly and tried to be the smart guy. Try better next time.

They seem to have some kind of bug, my fiancee was unable to unlock a tainted character despite grabing the corpose in a SOLO match. Can't confirm for others tho
