*Spoilers* Tips for Cat Got Your Tounge?
So yeah I never had any luck with guppy's hairball...is there some alternative here? Like using familiars or something? Does anything allow for tear type shooting or is it just banned in this challenge?

Well, the ideal way to beat non-tear challenges is to pick up an item that shoots tears regularly. Ideally you want 9 volt and tammy's head. Tammy's head, which is an equipable item, will shoot tears in 8 directioins and 9 volt changes a one charge item into a timed charge. Tammy also responds to any type of shot you have equiped even if you can not fire tears yourself. So if you have brimstone, 8 way already charged brimstone. Mom's knife, 8 way knife shot. This is some what rare so if you have the option to do this, abuse it.

Otherwise, get familars and visit the shop a lot.

But in the cat got your tongue challange you don't have tears.

a couple minutes ago I beat this challenge on my first try, surprisingly enough.

here are some tips.

Tip 1: controlling the hairball ain't as hard as it may seem at first. your best way to hit stuff is to run in circles, swinging the hairball like a morning star. practice a bit and eventually you get the hang of it. the more stuff/monsters you kill, the bigger your hairball gets, doing more damage.

Tip 2: quickly rush to the boss, kill it, and go to the next floor. your hairball is pretty strong on it's own, you don't need stats upgrades at all. loot every coin you can get on your way to the boss and pay the shop a visit if you happen to find one while heading to the exit. a compass or even some garbage spacebar item is going to help you out, a lot!

Tip 3: don't hesistate to use bombs to skip rooms. (bombing a closed door will open it) you want to rush to the boss as quickly and painless as possible. so use those bombs wisely.

that's all for now. good luck! you'll need it!

Ok...that is some terrible advise.
You should never listen to someone who got lucky and beat the challenge the first try.
Although his first tip was correct. But unfortunately relyaing on your hairball alone can be very very difficult.

There are several ways to beat this challenge.

1. Use the hairball itself.

The hairball does fixed damage, so you can't lower or push it's damage.
BUT...unlike someone here says....getting more damage ist essential. If you choose to play with the hairball, every hit generates a blue fly and the flies deal damage according to your own damage. So you absolutely have to get damage for the flies, since they will be your best friends.
You also should keep the head. Try to get something that allows you to use it more often, so visit the shops. The best item you can get is the Hive Mind which makes your flies stronger.
Use your flies, generate them with your hairball and try to keep your distance while swinging the hairball to hit and generate flies.
The best stat you can get ist damage and speed, since speed allows you to swing the hairball in a bigger radius and makes it easier to get away from enemies, after hitting them with your haiball.

2. Deal damage with something else in addition to the hairball

There are several Items, who deal damage besides the hairball.
You can use them to deal damage in a safe way, keep your distance and slowly kill your enemies. Familiars might work, but most familiars are too weak, to help you in the later stages.
Of course there are great familiars like rotten baby or lil brimstone.
Besides the familiars and of course BFFS there are other items who are great damage dealers.
You can collect bombs and use them, but you cant always count on getting lots of bombs.
Look out for Bob's Brain, the candle, Daddy Longlegs, the Red Candle.
I would'nt get anything else than Guppy's Head, since it can be used every room.
If you have however, something very strong like Brimstone or Mom's Knife on you, than I would take Tammy's Head, since it will fire with those Brimstone or Knife shots.

Also get attack flies or the sacrificial knife...they are great.

3. Rely on something other than the hairball

There are ways to get through the challenge without using the hairball.
You could be lucky to get Epic Fetus to override it. Or you can hope for a dice room Number 1 or 6 to change everything. Those rooms can remove your blindfold, so that you can shoot again.
Or you can use the bible or chaos card to kill the strong boss or Mom.
Collect Emperor Card or the shovel to skip the last floors and get to mom fast an kill her with the bible or the chaos card.

In any way...the worst tip you got here is to rush through.
Take your time and kill everything. In every room there could be a Speed Up Pill which is crazy good in this run, or useful cards or the perfect familiar or even just hearts that you might need.

But let me says this......since you only have to kill mom...if you think this challenge is hard...be warned. It is actually just a walk in the park.

I ended up swapping from using my keyboard to a controller for this one. After countless attempts trying to rapidly press W-A-S-D-W-A-S-D to get that sweet hairball spin and getting mixed results the joystick was a godsend. I was flinging that hairball around like a pro. I completed the challenge on my first try after the swap, as cliche as that sounds. Might not be an option for some, but if you can, give it a try.

Just use familiars. It's how I beat the challenge. The hairball is really only useful for smaller enemies and it shines on the first few floors when spiders and flies are everywhere which can be killed easily to power it up fast. Later floors, you won't be able to rely on the hairball except with the occasional enemy that chases you. I highly suggest you restart your run if you can't land an orbital on the first two floors. When I beat this challenge, I had a Meat Chunk and the Sacrifical Dagger - the dagger does insane amounts of damage and blocks projectiles, so it's rather easy to just run up to an enemy and let the dagger kill it. If you manage to find the dagger, check every shop and hope for a Boomerang so you can stun bosses for easy kills.

Alternatively, if you get lucky with Tammy's Head, I would just stick it out and hope for damage upgrades and/or something powerful like Brimstone. You don't need 9 Volt to make use of Tammy's Head, but it does help.
