The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

DLC as new player?
Hey! Watched some videos and got mixed feelings about starting fresh with the dlcs as a lot of videos say they add bloat and is towards hardcore players.

Should I clear rebirth a few times and get used to it before getting them, or am I ok jumping straight in repentance?

edit: Ty so much for all the comments! I ended up going with Repentance and am having a blast so far, I love the amount of strategy that I can do in each run to increase my odds of succeeding

when i started i had all the dlcs and it was INCREDIBLE, just make sure to have an item description mod, to learn the game a bit with it, then disable the mod and defeat mother atleast once without mods, that way your able to always use the item description mod

You know you can use something very usefull call "memory", 'learning" and "taking your time" ? This works for both new players and old players btw.
You have so many games in your backlog you can't even play this one normally ? You need to turbo speed run and finish it in no time ? You don't have the time to learn the game, you need to skip some parts of it by adding a third wheel to your bike ?

I swear, ppl today can't remember 10 effects without needing an item description.

This is why the games are so easy today, ppl need a baby mode and everything explained to them immediately or they will cry and review bomb it.
Where are the misteries ? The discoveries ? The hidden locations and secrets ?

Bro who hurt you so bad? Jesus just say you think its best to try things yourself for a bit and move on, gatekeeping freak.Talking about people crying and look at you...

Even Edmund himself said it was nice, and here you are jerking yourself off like you know any better, let people play how they want, disagree but don't act like they are beneath you for that.

mysteries has a Y in it btw
I'd say it's better to get started with repentance tbh because imo if you learn the game with like no dlc and then add the dlc that changes stuff it would throw you off better to get started with the full experience
And hell repentance adds allot of fun stuff to do

Edmund himself said recently that he wants to add item descriptions to the game, in particular to make that information accessible to off-steam users. Will this be as in depth as the mod? No, probably not. But it's nice not needing to pull up the wiki while you're in your first 100 hours of the game, or needing to remember how many times you've used the sack room.

As someone who owns and appreciates the DRM free version of this game on GoG, I'm thrilled that we haven't been forgotten. I was actually starting to wonder, and I mean that as respectfully as I can manage. This is one of my favorite games of all time at this point, so knowing that even more polish is going into it is fantastic.

I'm sure whatever they cook up will be glorious.
To bring it back to topic OP from my previous diversion, I'd start with Repentance as most suggest. Prior to the latest patch or two, Repentance used to throw quite a few tougher-than-usual bosses at you early on (Baby Plum, Bumbino, etc) but they are now locked behind content. Even prior to the patch, I'd probably recommend starting with Repentance... although I did ease myself in with Rebirth first, as I was borderline overwhelmed jumping straight into Repentance. I knew I'd be playing for a long time, though, so I didn't mind taking the time.

Alright, see ya later and have a good weekend.

Yeah, especially when there's no way to knaw which effects you have from the items unless you already have hundreds of hours.
You pick up the item, learn what it does and remember it for future runs, easy

Chill, dude, even Edmund agrees that item description should be in the vanilla game as of now, after all the expansions are out, stop trying to gatekeep people and try to touch some grass maybe.
The ultimate argument: "Ed said it's a good idea". Have you ever noticed how youtubers who play with EID always struggle to remember what modded items or even things from official expansions do? The mod reduces your interaction with the game for the sake of single-run convenience and, in my opinion, makes the whole experience a lot less special and personal. Many people from a reddit post discussing the same thing seem to agree - even those who started playing after Repentance came out.

Instead of adding an out-of-place wall of text to vanilla and removing all memorization once and for all, a better thing to do would be to just extend the short & cryptic descriptions that pop up when you pick up an item. Then you'd still have to use it at least once to know what it does, and the fun of memorizing item effects would be kept.

A more thorough description can be included in the Collection menu that has been useless ever since the Flash version came out. Kinda like Gungeon's ammonomicon, but with more technical info than flavor text.

I'd love to see something like this, even if there's no descriptions added in the run itself. I like going back into the Ammonomicron to check out the cool unlocks and reading about them, and that'd be amazing (and quite a bit lengthier by now) for Isaac.

As far as memorizing items go, the only items I bothered to memorize early on were the items I definitely did not want to pick up again unless under extremely niche circumstances. Most of those are so obvious that they became hardwired into my brain. That gave me plenty of time to start figuring out what the other stuff does little by little.

I like the trial and error / experimentation aspect, but I guess it's not for everyone.
