What comes up more often is what specific upgrade types are good for what characters. That's things like how homing is good for low-health characters, which lets you focus on dodging because you can fire somewhat blindly, and also for characters with Brimstone-style attacks because can help get more of the beam's damage area onto more enemy hitboxes than just firing straight beams. Of course, that's really just a simple two-part synergy where you have mostly or entirely in control the first part of the synergy (which character you choose).
