What's wrong with the current music?
I'm not a professional, I'm not even an ametuer, but something about the music that is currently in the game is just unsatisfying. I've logged 400+ hours into the game, and I can barely remember the music each floor has. Something I noticed, that might be a problem, is the volume of each song never changes. The same level of sound is constantly being put out. Every main floor song is just 4 instruments playing simultaneously, at a medium volume, for 4 minutes, and then it loops. I'm not a musician, and honestly, don't know what's wrong with the music that's in game. So can any more talented people tell me what it is, or better yet, tell the developers, so maybe they can improve it in Repentance? I want one of my favorite games to have the music it deserves.

You mean you don't break out into a "Wah....Wah Wah...Wah... Wah Wah" every time you start off on basement? I doubt your hours bro.

Some people don't like the style compared to the original

I got a couple thousand hours and I turned the music off during the first run and never turned it back on.

That said, my reason is that I simply do not like it. I disagree that background music for a game should be memorable or vary in volume. It's not supposed to distract from the gameplay.

I tend to like ambient music that leans into being an actual song with ambient elements rather then the other way around (if that makes sense)

With a lot of the tracks, I feel like there isn't enough "music" in them to make them stand out from each other, with the worst example to me being the Flooded Caves theme (Literally just a simple guitar rift with water droplets in the background)

On the other hand, I think that some of the music tracks feel off in there respective stages, with the worst example being Cellar's theme (It feels too "grand" for one of the potential starting levels)

That said, there are a number of music tracks that I think are absolute bops, my favorites being the Void's theme (Essentially a self-reflection as you travel through the fractured memories of Isaac's run) Ultra Greed's boss theme, and the small "stinger" the plays on the boss VS. screen

Also, the music that has been revealed for Repentance so far has been absolutely fantastic! Downpour is what I've always wanted the Flooded Caves to sound like.

A quick idea I can give you is that you've simply grown bored of the music. When you've played a game for 400+ hours with the same tracks playing over and over, it's not that weird of a thing to happen. Does this sound familiar? I never play with the music on nowadays, instead opting for either other music or streams or whatever.

I agree with the idea that the music shouldn't distract from the gameplay, but now mention any game where the music distracts from the gameplay. It's never really an issue, and you can have subtle GOOD music, instead of what the game currently has, which is ultra subtle BAD music.

I got the vaporwave music mod and haven't looked back.

It's lacking energy and good melodies compared to :happymeat: and Flash :isaac:. Those two were scored by dannyB who is really talented.

the problem with the music is a lot of it isn't really music, just a bunch of ambient sounds.
which sound bad and boring if you listen to it by itself outside of the game.
the repentance tracks sound amazing though, I wish the music for the whole game had been made like that!

Most of the floor music (aside from the first floor tracks, Sheol, Cathedral, Void, and Necropolis in my opinion) are pretty ambient and/or hard to distinguish from each other, so I definitely agree with that. Repentance's revealed tracks do seem to fix this to an extent, which I'm excited for.

However, at least for me the boss music is extremely memorable and goes hard as hell. There isn't a single boss track that I actively dislike in the entire game -- I think Delirium's is a bit forgettable, but I actively look forward to hearing most of the other ones.

It is pretty lackluster.
