i'd just recommend waiting or modding tainted lazarus, they left him unfinished so who cares really, not to mention the fact a bunch of items just don't work properly with him (Abyss, Bumbo and other bum familiars to name some) but if you're dying to do it legit then here's how i went about it:
-give damage ups to dead lazarus at the start, he has a higher damage multiplier and you want to use him to fight all the bosses
-other things go to alive lazarus, but you mainly want to look for other ways of dealing damage which aren't damage ups, such as familiars, tear modifiers or stuff that gives you flat damage like blood clot
-when dead lazarus is strong enough, start giving damage ups to alive lazarus and vice versa to balance them out
-have patience because the only upside to tainted lazarus is that he can potentially have double the max health of everyone else. sure, you're gonna have mediocre half-baked stats, but all the extra health can help you survive the million years it's gonna take you to kill the endgame bosses
-don't rule out devil deals; sure the meta rn is angel rooms but since you can't get more than 1 item out of an angel room then going for devil deals might be a good call
also there's a couple of glitches you can abuse if you find them, e.g. Lost Soul respawns every time you flip to the side which has it, letting you guarantee the free items, or losing a Lemegeton wisp as the form which didnt spawn it gives you a permanent item on the form which spawned the wisp
