70% of the time, I get a friendly that automatically self destructs and then turns into an enemy that actually hurts me.
Not to mention that the rolling things that leave creep on the ground (I'm lost for their name atm, sorry), stop rolling around and are stuck in the same corner for the rest of the game.
I like the idea of the challenge, and it's plenty challenging, but because it doesn't feel like it's working the way it's supposed to, the only time I got close to actually beating it was when I dumped the starting active item for Guppy's Head on the first floor.

I've even had random damage from friendlies happen from time to time, the source of the damage being inconsistent as to anything in particular.
I think you forgot it's a CHALLENGE. It's supposed to be somewhat difficult and make you adjust to what's given to you.
You can still shoot enemies. It's not like you need to rely on them. It also instantly recharges as your friendly dies. It is basically a buffed Pokeball from a regular run.
I honestly tried to play it as intended but my own monsters ended up covering up half the room, some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kept spawning friendly brains who confused me with their harmless goo and another one kept blasting me all over the place with "friendly" explosions. Not to mention their constant cries of anger as they tried to kill me in vain. Clearly they were unhappy with being enslaved by yours truly. They were ,however, successfully giving me a headache and when they all finally perished to a boss I was glad to be rid of them.
You're right.
My biggest problem still is with the bugged out friendlies, though. As in: the ones that don't move, get stuck forever, or randomly hurt you when they shouldn't be able to (like how sometimes randomly your friendly's creep hurts you, or bullets from your friendlies hurt you).
The problem is, though.. I really don't wanna cheese my way through a challenge. It'd be like rerolling myself in the Head Trauma challenge.
That's the trade off - you have the possibility of taking damage from your own friendlies. It's not bugged. You can indefintely spawn friendlies - but the risk of taking damage from your own is greater when you spawn one.
Actually, it is bugged. The rolling dude with creep is beyond a doubt very much bugged. Also, I'm pretty sure that on very random ocassions bullets from your friendlies hurting you is also a bug. There's no way they intented for random bullets to be able to hit you.
The rolling dude is defintely bugged. He didn't die for 4-5 floors and was stuck in the corner, unable to do damage. I'm doing the challenge right now. I'm on Utero II and I currently aren't having any problems. Worst case scenario, just avoid using Friendly Ball anyways, it makes the screen chaotic half the time.
