Nostalgia for what exactly?
"I have no idea why people like this game."
Just talking about myself here, but I guess many of the game's fans will agree with most of my points.
It sounds well, it looks well and most importantly, it plays & controls well.
It has some difficulty but is never unfair. It focuses on streamlined gameplay while also having a simple and charming narrative. Its play-style allows for some variations.
Shovel Knight: An 8-bit platformer where you battle 8 knights and then go to the fortress of the main bad guy.
Megaman: An 8-bit platformer where you battle 8 robots and then go to the fortress of the main bad guy.
I don't think the game is bad but I never found it interesting.
I'm not trying to insult Shovel Knight (the bosses are charming) but anything is more charming than the Megaman bosses.
And to clarify i personally have no actual nostalgia for Megaman or any of the Old 8-Bit platformes of ye olde NES times since i have been a PC-Gamer for most of my life and i still enjoy Shovel Knight for what it is and that is a damn fine game.
I semi enjoyed the game but it really shouldn't have been at the top of everyone's games of 2014.
I do enjoy 2d retro style-based games. And minecraft is overrated. I can't really say that about CoD because lots of people hate it and I haven't played GTA V.
Different strokes for different folks and all that, but the game made the top of everyone's games of 2014 for a very good reason.
I don't think it's bad but I don't see why it was on the top of everyone's games of 2014 lists.
It mixes elements from some of the best games of old in a really cohesive way, but puts its own spins on them as well to keep things fresh. The level design is amazing, with a steep but fair difficulty curve. The vast array of relics you get allow you to play the game in a variety of ways. There's lots of nice secrets to discover, some that I missed the first time I played. The sprite work and music are completely loyal to the NES while simultaneously being really awesome. It was not only one of the top 2014 games for me, but it's probably my favorite game of the recent years.
Even all that aside, the game has an incredible amount of personality to it, and even now I enjoy booting it up and getting through it a few times, and there's more to come, like Plague of Shadows which will be coming really soon. I can't speak for everybody, but those are my reasons.
I found the "difficulty" near the end of the game to be more spikes and pits. And let's face it you only used the Flare Wand and the Phase Locket.
Spikes, pits, those samurai enemies, Mega Man style boss refights... There were lots of spikes and pits, yet, but there were some pretty annoying enemies in there.
And no, I did not. I made a point of never using the phase locket, and I much preferred using the orb, the propeller dagger and the dust knuckles than the flare wand.
