My KB has a few annoyances dealing with letter combinations, so playing games tend to get annoying fast when they demand to use letters instead of numbers.
Thankfully arrow keys + numpad work just fine.
Have you tried Joy2Key? I use it for many games. I know it's not the best solution, but it is an option.
I have Xpadder, and you're right it's not my ideal choice since it "feels" like there's some miniscule input lag.
If you have Logitech controllers you will probably have to switch the input to Xinput for them to work (I think it's a button on the back of the pad).
If you have an older DirectInput controller you may need a third party program to make them emulate 360 controllers' Xinput format. It's called x360ce:

Don't flip out, I'm sure they'll be online tomorrow and be able to address any problems. In the meantime I'd just use Joy2Key if nothing else works.
I have a wired PS2 adapter that allows controllers PS1+2 to act as a default gamepad.
I'm hoping I won't even have to use x360ce once I, or someone else, fixes the issue.
I get very irritated when a game assumes you should use a 360 controller, button prompts and all.
But in any case, can't you just use x360ce and ditch that other program?
It's still unacceptable for a game to assume you should be using one. Which thankfully this game doesn't.
There's no reason to ever use x360ce unless the game supports analog function, or has poor KB+M support and "requires" a controller/gamepad.
And no I can't just use x360ce because it only works if the game even recognizes a controller in the first place.
I haven't gotten that far yet.
Xpadder or KB is fine. It's just a minor inconvenience that the game doesn't want to recognize I have any kind of gamepad plugged in when others do.
I dunno, I did an entire blog featured on Destructoid about how big a deal 360 controllers were for PC gaming. Not going to repeat it all here, take a read if you like:
