If you die a lot, you drop gold, and might not always recovering the gold bags. If you go into a stage with 3000 gold, you might be leaving with less than you started with for a loss, or at least not hitting your potential income for that stage. In my experience, when I die a lot on a level... sometimes it's worth hitting "Return to Map" so that I re-gain my starting gold, then I can return to the stage and finish it with a better loot score due to the experience gained while grinding that stage.
My other thought is that, "Back in my day....", NES games didn't often save or offer checkpoints at all ;)
Just my humble opinion though!
And I respect your opinion. I just wish that at the midway checkpoint in dungeons, it gave you the option to save so you can leave and get back on later.
And the money issue is also a very solid point. You'll be greatful to simply rewalk that half you took so much time to learn last time without having lost all the money that the learning process took from you. It's not that long after all and enjoyable too, right? (might've also stocked up on upgrades in the mean time to make it easier this time around instead of being stuck, saved in the level, with a horrible status)
As it works now, if you want to take a rest you need to minimize your game and leave your computer running, potentially all night. Yes, I remember doing this in the NES days, but this is not a 'feature' I miss from those.
That may be true but what about the group of people (Like me) who enjoyed those old games and this one but weren't very good at them?
But the next time you go through the level you will go way faster, since you learned from your mistakes and can just breeze through things that killed you before.
That iteration/mastering process is part of old school game design, though it may be lost to this generation since old games are often played on emulators with save states and all.
A feature like that wouldn't do harm necessarily, but I think it didn't even cross their minds in development.
That being said, nothing stops you from pausing the game on PC and resuming it whenever you're ready.
I would grab it but I don't have much cash at the moment. I would pause it but what if I was in the middle of a level and had to go out for dinner?
I wouldn't know, I haven't played on many fixed save point games. And the ones that I have, their save points or checkpoints are very frequent.
I will try to plan time to play but things do happen.
