Ending discussion [SPOILERS]
So what do you guys think about the ending? I was getting lovecraftian vibes through out the game and the ending confirmed my suspicions. Well atleast this is my interpretation :)

Can someone who's done everything maybe answer this one?
There's a room on floor 16 (I think - it's the second dark maze area) in the middle that has an ice bridge and there's a black sphere in the distance - it's one of the few quiet rooms in that whole area.
It almost looks like there's a path there but I've figured out no way to reach it/activate it, even with the lantern fully upgraded. Is this just a visual thing? The music gets really ominous at that point, kind of like in every other room you shine the lantern on, but nothing happens on my end. I thought maybe it'd be an NG+ thing, but there appears to be no NG+ (though amusingly enough I think the game bugged out because when it reset, the teleporters to lvl20 and lvl4 were still active and I got to loot a Crystal Lance. Now that I've been down the normal way, the teleporters are gone again).
I needs to know what that sphere thing does.

I was also a bit bummed out that the ending cinematic was some pre-rendered thing with those wonky hands and some generic little dude instead of keeping with the art direction of the rest of the game (like it was subcontracted or something). The eyeball thing looked great, but that whole sequence of the adventurer holding the lamp and getting squeezed was disappointing. They could have done that whole bit in-engine and it would have looked so much better and I'd have a felt a much stronger connection to the monumental ♥♥♥♥ up of this particular adventurer.

I have to wonder what those little glowy bit thingies we're collecting from monsters are.
I guess souls because dark souls. Or something like that.
I thought it was a neat touch that there aren't any in the catacombs that aren't from the (few) dark enemies there (also in this area the darkness was grabbing and absorbing any bits not claimed by me, which I hadn't really noticed it doing in the dark maze later). Enemies there are just crazy people with nothing inside, then you get to that shrine with the fang skull at the very end where they're worshipping this single soul bit and it's just sad.

i didn't get how you saw the ending scene without opening this dark sphere, for me i had to go up the tower that takes you to the skies, then i put the lantern there and it took the stars or w/e and then i went back to 16 in the middle to open the dark sphere and only then i saw the last scene.. so i don't understand how you saw the scene without opening that sphere.. can you elaborate?

Ah, you're thinking of a different room.
This isn't the gate where you shine your lamp and all the stars appear and open the gate to end the game. I'm talking about a different room, it looks like a transition area right in the middle of two sections of the maze. It's an ice bridge with no tentacles or anything (it's not even particularly dark) and there's a crack in the ice where lights comes in and you can see a long square pillar with a black sphere at the end...
Ooooooooooh wait I just realized it's probably just foreshadowing of the gate since you're a level (or two) above it at that point (in fact I think they might line up on the map position as well). That black pillar with the sphere the gate that you open on the levels below, just seen from above I guess.
I'll get a screenshot once I reach that point again, I just have to not die before I get there again.

EDIT:
Yeah ok, the sphere is definitely the gate. You can see the bridge leading up to it on the right, and the giant pillar is basically the structure we've been following along downwards the entire game. Derp, I was so convinced it was some secret thing.

oh you mean the bridge which had a "piece of light" on it i guess.. yeah i remember trying to get into the ice crack lol.. dont think its a hidden way or something, pretty sure if it was we could see it on the map like the rest of hidden rooms in the game.
there are a lot of doors in the game which seems like they can be opened (mainly in the ruined ciry area) i pretty much tried putting bombs on all of them and nothing happened, maybe they will do something with those doors on a dlc or something

I just beat the game and I'm kinda mind ♥♥♥♥♥♥, lol. But yeah I think it is alot of what people have been saying. You go through just out of curiosity perhaps. Or maybe heard rumors of a dark force on this island. Maybe even of the lost civilization. You then assume that collecting the light will destroy the dark and it turns out you were wrong and let the darkness free.

On another note. There were two doors in this game that I never opened. I believe I opened every other door in the game. There were two doors that had hexagonal locks. Does anyone know how to open them and what they did? There was a hexagon on the door and another hexagon on the ground.

And one more question for anyone who knows. After you collect all the pieces, what happens if you don't go up the tower and collect the stars? Can you still open the darkness, does something else happen?

the hexagon plates in front of hexagon doors are meant to be hit with the hammer

i tried to open the sphere before collecting the stars and the bridge opened for me, but after you walked inside there is a big sqaure block that can't be opened without the stars, after you take the stars you light that square block and it shatters and stuff..

I finally discovered this damned last shortcut and went through the floors after 20. I do not like similar twists in games, that is, if the game starts enter the aliens in the plot (especially at the end), then I consider this not a very good move. It's just weird for this game. This will not change my attitude to the game, I still like this game. But these floors are not suitable for this game. I would be less angry with them if they were made in a “sandy” environment, like level 20 (for me this is one of the most atmospheric places in the game). Even if strange “aliens” still flew in such an environment and there was this sphere-boss, it would be much better than shiny surfaces and strange traps on these floors. Ok ... it remains for me to find the last 6 shards of light and return to the damned dark levels. By the way ... for the entire game, I never once saw that the temperature indicator of the main character fell. Everyone is talking about the 4th level, but apparently I passed it quickly enough, or I missed something on it.

i felt a bit disappointed that the desert area came out so short. it looks so cool and the music was special, too

Agreed, for a game to take so long to come out, I feel as though there were somethings that were lacking. I felt they spent too many floors on the darkness area. But don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this game all the way through.

There are definite mysteries to the high tech place. I didn't mind it as much but I could definitely see it being better in desert areas. It reminded me a lot of hyperlight drifter so that's probably why I didn't mind as much. But I think it would have done well to have less high tech stuff. The interesting thing about this game was that there weren't any bosses besides the sphere robots. At the end I was expecting to fight the darkness and spent a lot of time preparing healing and armor, lol. So I was kinda disappointed when there was no boss at the end.

For me, the ice level where you fight the first sphere dude, I spent too long looking around and got killed by the ice. But I found the hat later that slows the freezing process and I was alright after that.

Can someone help me?

So I missed a bit #4 and complete all levels up to 20 (including both scify dungeons).

When I was on lvl16 I didn't open the door with some clockface on it maybe because I didn't have bit #4 or something.

In any case after I returned to the spawn from lvl 20 through the sea and collected the new bit on the beach I go to the search of bit #4 and found it on lvl 4. After that I get whole path to lvl 16 again opened the door with clockface and get to some highlighted thing there but I can't do nothing further.

I've tried to return to the spawn and do something with the last locked building (lighthouse I believe?) but still nothing. Any help?

You missed a shortcut that opens that building up from inside and lets you go up the tower.
On the climb down before you drop into the big water hole where you can't come back anymore (I think it's before 14?), there's a section in the middle that has some stairs to the left that you might have missed? That should take you to an elevator that goes up into the tower and then you open it from the inside.

Thank you so much at last I've finished the game! So after watching the final movie and checking achievement description I have my mind on the game lore:

We are playing for some kind of dark cultists that worships the Dark (see below). They arrives to the island-prison where the Dark is sealed in the sarcaphagus (from achievement description) to set it free (from achievement description). The new one is sent after a while when the previous one obviously failed (the dead body flesh is rotten and only the skeleton remains when the next character arrives).

Light is obviously the best way to seal the Dark. The usage of star light as a key is logical because it can't get it underground where the Dark is sealed and it can't use it to unseal itself.

The complete "lantern" is needed to collect star light to unseal the sarcaphagus deep underground. The cultists in the robes with lanterns that attacks you are the last standing guards the remnants of the lost civilization that sealed the Dark. Crystal creatures and tentacles are just some mindless beings or remnants of the old machines that fell under the Dark control but they don't know your intentions and they are trying to get the key from you.

After Dark has been released it uses our character in some ritual to corrupt the "lantern" key and empower itself furthermore (the character doesn't even try to defend himself that shows that he know what he is doing and all of it was intentional).

I finished the game yesterday and have been mulling over it.
I'm not spoiling it because whoever's jumped to the second page of a fully spoiled thread better know what they're getting into.
My assorted thoughts and opinions:

1. I don't think you actually die, I think you become whatever the single red gem ontop of the skeletons is to the skeleton. At best, it's brain, at worst just some kind of power cell.

2. No, really, who puts the key to the ancient evil's cell around its cell, literally in its arm's reach?

3. If the lanturn is just the key to the cell why is the darkness hindering you, not helping you?

4. Does the Darkness covet or abhor the light? Shinging the light onto the darkness seems clear enough, but remember when you find a bit after the light fades what's surrounding it is the same cosmic darkness at the end, and it's light that sets it free.

5. The thing is dead, or atleast asleep. The final room we breach is "The Sarcophagus" after all.

6. Really wild here, but I got this crazy idea in my head that the thing in the final room we breach (a sphere enrapt in tentecles) is a miniture snowglobe second version of the world. It's also the only way I could make "The Other Shore" make any kind of sense in my head, kind of a "turtles all the way down" scenario that sees us going not only deeper into the world but into a deeper layer of existence, which is ultimately what we corrupt. We have brought the darkness "up one turtle."

7. I want to say we actually did something good, killing or banishing the dark, right up until the very final act, where the lines around where the lanturn started have turned red from their original blue, just like those surrounding a trap, as if to say "Do not do this." Then we... who knows, become the darkness, summoned it from beyond, can't really say. Maybe we used the light to banish the dark, but then, whoops, contained the light causing the darkness to resurge? The Lanturn/light both harming, containing, and finally freeing the darkness seem at complete odds in my mind.
