The only one I can specifically remember was on the north shore on the far right side by the wreckage on land
Similarly if you go to the place where you found the leather armor (the shipwreck area) you might find a spear.
I think its random.
Bats, rats and snakes can be killed for meat and leather. If they drop innards do not eat them.
In the shipwreck area you can swim out to the fish and chase them to shore, then use your spear to kill them for fillets.
The enemies that can block your attacks (the ones with 2 red weapons) can be easily damaged with the sword+shield. When there is some space between you they might do a dash / lounge attack. If you hold block and then stab while they lounge they take damage.
Spamming the spear normal attack seems to be able to break their block, leaving them open for attack.
I'll add a couple more things I've found. If you know you're going to die, or just want to suicide to get a leg up on the next run, leave your bottles in the pocket realm storage, then you can have the extra for your future runs. Make more soup and stew and elixer instead of eating just the raw food.
I ate the innards out of desparation, puked on a beautiful looking shrine. it was the secret storage area for gems that was mentioned in the OP :)
You can also knock those enemies block down using a shield attack and follow it with 2 quick sword slashes.
And are you refering to the crystals from those little guys that like to run away and turn invisible just like the crystal lizards from Dark Souls? killed a few, gotten random items from them, the one time I did get a crystal I died by spike trap shortly after, then died again trying to recover my corpse, so I was never able to regain it.
As for being able to regain spear/leather armor thank god. I was wondering how I was going to retreive those.
Gems are also good for marking your path if you want to find the way back. I wish they stayed between lives though.
The 'bits' of light you find ARE in sequence, though not necessarily as 'numbered'. (I found the second one on level 3, for example, and the third on 4, but there are levels that there aren't any bits at all.) Some are just in the standard level, others are locked behind closed paths you must find a way through.
So far, getting bits doesn't seem to do anything. They do seem to correspond to a thing that happens in an area that you unlock around level 12, but I think I have to collect 'all' of them for it to accomplish anything.
Your sword attacks DO push the little light bits away from you. Attacking wildly can cost you.
You do find reasons to revisit old areas, mostly for farming purposes.
It's entirely possible to skip past entire floors on accident. My first time through I definitely skipped level 4, and may have even skipped level 3.
There is a shop in the game that use those lantern fuel pieces. It costs to get in, however, and I'm not sure it's worth it. It... might move between levels? I could swear I first saw it on or past level 5, but ended up unlocking it at level 3, so maybe it was always on 3.
