If it still fails using the windows xbox drivers, you can utilize x360 controller emulator, which makes your game think you're using a 360 controller, and it will work perfectly. http://www.x360ce.com/default.aspx
It's not the dev's fault, it's the controllers. They're proprietary, and should do more to implement x-input on a better level.

Saved me a return with Steam.
The steam controller should, in theory, work out of the box with the new upgrade.
When you said this, did you mean xbox one controller, or steam controller support? Regardless it's good news for someone in this thread
