I also think personal connections to some real world links, and someone approaching it as an experience rather than a herp derp game wif goals and, pew pew, and points systems.
The slenderman game isn't scary at all, it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Unity game slapped together by an amateur in about a weekend. It completely lacks atmosphere, all it does is startle the player in an obnoxious manner.
Among The Sleep does have it's share of jumpscares and loud audio cues, but at least those are competently made.
Ok, you think you can do better, go right ahead. :-)
That is exactly what I did and definitely made for a more interesting playthrough.
