I'd argue pulling yourself out of the immersion makes the game less fun, but personal security should come before such things :)
If you don't enjoy hiding in a closet shivering in terror because some horrific creature is looking for you, or running for your life from some nameless squiddly mouth with legs, then it's probable that you simply won't like this type of game at all. I don't recommend just trying to "work up to" bigger scares if they're not your thing, you either enjoy the sensation or you don't. It's a bit of a fringe genre.
What I do recommend is that you find out if they're for you by jumping straight into the scariest game ever made, Amnesia. If you can handle that game with the lights off, alone, sound up, headphones on and no distractions without having to turn the game off, you're a horror gamer and this game ought to be very appealing to you. ;)
If you're underage, you probably ought to wait until you're older for scary games. Not trying to be insulting there, it's just prudent. :) Whatever you decide, I hope you find you enjoy them, as the genre seriously needs some TLC and more attention from people.
Oh - and one more thing - DO NOT watch any "let's play" or review videos before playing a horror game, because the thing is, they only work once - the first time you experience them. If you know what's coming, it won't get the same reaction from you.
Once you learn AI pattern, game becomes less scary and you can even try playing with sound. Bioshock is just a "creepy shooter" game, it's no horror. Game is only a little scary at first but once you started playing for a few hours, the horror will be gone and you will just become a mad man shooting everything. New Bioshock is not even creepy, it just has an interesting story.
You make me sad.
