Where is the Activity...?
So far the only servers I see that are active at all is just some "prison escape" server, "city RPG" server and a "zombie survival" server that manages to be even more shallow than DayZ and Infection: Survival Stories (previously known as The War Z) combined. I am aware of the abundant freebuild servers, but even these are extremely inactive, with less than five people each.

According to Wikipedia, 60 000 people have purchased Blockland, but only ~0.5% of those customers seem to be satisfied enough with Blockland to be playing it actively. Am I missing something?

Yeah, unfortunately you're online when many players are just waking up.

It's still a fairly poor conversion rate. If over 60 000 people purchase a product but less than 1% of them use it then I think you have a problem with your product barely appealing to anyone. What is strange, though, is that I like Blockland in itself, but there are no game modes available or any populated servers. So far the only things available are watered down equivalents already available in Garry's Mod and ROBLOX.

It's been ages since I have played ROBLOX, but at least ROBLOX had variation going for it. Titanic falling off of waterfall survival, building fortresses against invading zombies, hide and seek, millions of dumb "roleplay" servers and so on.

Good games do not seem to have that problem, from what I have noticed.

Well, one thing to keep in mind is those 60,000+ players constitute everybody who has ever made an account, ever, during at least the six year span since the retail release. Many of them do not play the game regularly anymore, and that's just what naturally happens with any online game that has been around for years. If it really bothers you, try to get your friends into the game or find something else to play.
Those 60,000 purchases have been over almost a decade.

Size has nothing to do with quality. This game has been un-advertized for many years; this is really it's first major appearance other than a few small ads.

I'm not sure what you mean by "no game modes available". There are plenty of them, including a bunch of defaults.

If you want more people to play, just ask them to.

EVE Online peaks at 50 000 players daily after over ten years of lucrative lifetime, also with minimal advertisement.

What of it, if nobody uses them?
You obviously don't like small communities, so I'm sorry but we can't help you.

I never sought any solace from you, I am just trying to comprehend how such a mighty game has fallen to the claws of time.
Here are some stats: http://returntoblockland.com/stats.php?p=blGrowth
Please note that the total player count in inaccurate. This graph only accounts for people that have logged into an RTB-enabled server. You can clearly see where the Steam release started.

Also, if you look here: http://returntoblockland.com/stats.php?p=players
You can see that you're coming online at an unfortunate time; it's a very US-centric community, likely because of language barriers.

Still looks dead as ever, Corporal.
EDIT: That "Boss Battles" server looks interesting...

Like I said. A small active community. To me that looks like a very average server list.

Nevermind, it's just a copy of the Saxton Hale mod that utilizes none of the potential Blockland has.

I am sure that Blockland can handle more than ten people per server just fine.

Indeed they can but very few servers are that popular. During one New Year's party there were ~150 players in a single server. Like I mentioned before everyone wants their own server with their own selection add-ons and their own rules.
