born in Ohio in 1940 to Irish and Spanish immigrants. He then lived in New York during the 1960s (and from what I could find, still lives there?).
I've studied accents and linguistics some. So I can't tell you what particularly leads to the slurring (since it's the R you've noticed, maybe it's the Spanish background where the Rs are often rolled?), but basically everyone has an accent unique to themselves, which is influenced by their geographic locations during life, locations in time, native language, and parents' accents. He may or may not also have had speech training of some kind since he's an actor. Not all actors do, but that can also change the accent.
