How do I upgrade the Normandy and other upgrades?

Not quite understanding this. I have purchased thigns before, but thats only through the currency you obtain in game, and using some iridium here and there. But how do I upgrade the ship and other upgrades? Do I hve to go to every single planet and scan it for materials? Do I have to keep buying pods?

You upgrade the Normandy by
1 - Recruiting Mordin Solus
2 - Talking to your squad between missions to unlock the upgrade(s)
3 - Scanning planets for resources that the upgrade(s) requires
4 - Visiting the terminal in Mordin's cabin to have him create and install the upgrade(s).

Talking to a certain squad-mate will unlock Thanix cannons for the Normandy, while another will provide extra hull shielding, and a third will provide additional probe capacity, etc.
Not every squad-mate has an upgrade to offer.
Those that have upgrades to offer only offer one per squad-mate. So for instance, if you already got the Thannix cannons from Archangel, he won't have any other upgrades to offer you.

It's possible to upgrade the Normandy without scanning every planet, or even half of them. Do look around when out on missions; it's not uncommon to find a chest of Eezo or the other minerals laying around.

Ah ok. So I have 7 unlocks for the ship. I think thats all of them. I have "Sop the collecctors" final mission I think, where I have to travel to Omega 4 relay. But I have no ship upgrades yet.

So I am guessing, if the Thanix Cannon asks for palidium, I need to find planets that have that recourse and scan it? Same goes for the other upgrades?

I have no other missions to do except the collector one. So I guess it will have to be scanning planets and topping up on lots of petrol for the next hour

You also get unlocks from your companions' loyalty quests....

If you don't enjoy the planet scanning mini-game, there's also the ability to manipulate your save and resource stockpile via an editor. It potentially saves having to grind repeatedly for upgrades.

What do you mean by this? Is it something I download?

you can get the upgrades for free if you do squadmates loyalty missions, well it works for me, but Tali, Garrus and Jacobs are the ones that give you the Normandy upgrades (Tali=shields, Garrus=guns and Jacob=armour) after you completed the loyalty mission you should have got the upgrade for free

Yes, but to install the upgrades costs resources.

And if the editor is too much trouble, there are planets that are rich in certain resources. It took me about 30 minutes to get all the resources when I visited resource rich planets.
