Game crashes on launch
I need help. For some reason the game keeps crashing right after I launch it. I don't get to see anything, the crash is instantaneous. I try deleting and reinstalling everything as well as deleting appcache in the steam folder. I can't find any solution. Please help.
PS I have windows 8.1 (worst mistake ever I know) and I have already run ME2 on this PC multiple times before.

Still doesn't work for me and I still can't figure out what is the problem exactly.

I've had the same problem for a while now. I launch the game and followed by that is literally nothing. Nothing pops up and no error appears. My disk activity doesn't even rise in the slightest.

The issue has existed for well over a year now. From what I can tell, it is caused by the ME2 config tool in the game data. Running it causes some sort of corruption that breaks the game from launching successfully.

Although my copy is not the Steam version. I got mine as part of the ME Trilogy which (unfortunately) activated on Origin.

Sweet. And there's no solution?

I haven't found one yet, unfortunately. Reinstalling it works of course, but it still boils down to avoiding the ME2Config. Kind of hard when that is how you import your ME1 character.

Supposedly non-Trilogy versions are unaffected by this. Friend of mine has it on Origin and he tells me it worked fine for him the last time he tried.

Thing is I played it on the same computer a few months ago and I had my ME1 character in it. That's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ guys got it to work. I just updated my graphics driver and now it works fine! Try it hope it works for you too.

I've tested it twice within a year or so gap, so I've tested it on a few new and old drivers. My issue seems to be directly related to the ME2Config. The game is able to run fine, but only until I launch the ME2Config. After that, the game ceases to function.

It has happened to quite a few other people as well, but EA and Bioware have made little to no response to the issue.

A little lense into the past:

According to this thread, it's been a problem for years now. I'm amazed there isn't much news about this case of poor game support.

There are different causes for ME2 not to boot. The issue I had once upon a time was caused by the ME2 config utility changing something with the game files that made the game unable to launch.

Just a simple rename of binaries.

Same here but non of this worked for me. I figured it out. Go to This PC > Documents > BioWare > Mass Effect 2. Remove everything in this folder. (i.e. Binaries, BIOGame, and Save.) Try to start the game. Don't use the Mass Effect 2 Launcher. Just open the game normally. The launcher messes it up somehow.
