There's lore explaining the new Thermal Clips, it's in the codex. Guns still overheat but the heat sink is replaceable. They have "ammo" for balance reasons.
It's much better to have one key for several actions. The more free space I have in the keyboard the better.
More multi-function buttons, less dedicated keys. Instead of equipping each member of your team, you only equip yourself. Planet exploration and Mako removed, maps are tighter with more curation and less exploration.
But believe me,you'll get used to and like it more than ME1 controls.
Especially the thermo magazines (I always had the intend to reload in ME1, and always accidently threw bombs -.-)
I also always used an armor ability unless I'm a soldier to regen my health, and the squad mates that didn't have a natural healing ability.
I also really liked the loyalty missions in the second game, really added to the character development. Sadly your character is fully realized from the first game really it's really about the other characters becoming their own heroes.
I guess they wanted to please a larger audience and it even worked with me back then.
All three games are worth playing.
