I've never found an explanation for why, but it's probably related to some sort of bad script. Anyway, what has worked for me is just reloading the save and trying again. Eventually it has always worked. Sometimes the crash happens after the main fight and before I board the shuttle back to the Normandy, sometimes it happens after back on the Normandy and having the after mission conversation with Kasumi. But eventually it has always worked after a few trys.
One potential solution that you might consider (unless you completely hate EA and Origin, which I would understand), is to register your account on Origin and let it update to a newer version. It wanted to do a massive update for me, but I didn't let it. However, it's possible that the version it wants to update to would fix the problem. I wouldn't bet much money on that, however.
What fixed it for me was replaying the boss battle from the beginning - I had a quicksave just before entering the bossfight, and replaying from there worked.
Perhaps there's a weird script error depending on how you play out the fight, where if you play too fast/slow/weird it bugs out and crashes the game when it needs to unload the encounter?
The only other recommendation I have is to play the encounter in windowed mode - it doesn't do anything to fix the crash, I don't think, but it does make it easier to tab over to task manager to kill a locked-up game without having to reboot / switch user.
Yeah, now that I think of it, I believe that's where I restarted too.
Regarding using the savegame editor to resurrect her: Heh, that's a good idea. I think I'll do the same thing next time through ME2 and just skip the whole quest.
I loaded up the game and picked an old save that used to reliably crash. With your solution there was no crash. Thanks.
@ El Presidente,
It doesn't matter whether you have the game on Steam or Origin. Just go into your Origin game folder, to where the ME2 files are. Create a shortcut to the MassEffect2.exe file (Right-Click on the file name, then choose the menu option for creating a new shortcut). Now Right-Click on the new shortcut itself, and edit its properties to add -nomoviestartup after the file name in the Target file name box. From now on, use this shortcut to launch the game.
For instance, on my computer the target for the file looks like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mass Effect 2\Binaries\MassEffect2.exe" -nomoviestartup
If you have a default installation, the path to your file name will probably have "Origin Games\Mass Effect 2", where mine has "Steam\steamapps\common\Mass Effect 2". But it should work fine.
Note that this is pre-Windows 10. I've been boycotting Windows 10 (long story) and thus can't vouch for certain whether it works the same, but it probably does.
