There's a real-life species of fish that does this called Poecilia formosa
In ME2 they say that there are only 3 (known) in existence (Samara's 3 daughters). Normal pureblood asari are a lot more common (even Liara is pureblood, and I think several of the named asari you meet in the story are too). There is a prejudice against them, but it's pretty heavily implied that before spaceflight all asari mating was pureblooded.
In ME3 they changed their mind a little bit and made Ardat-Yakshi a bit more common. The monastery where you find Samara supposedly has several living there, but even then it's still very rare.
an Asari population of 7 billions in 1 planet before finding the prothean tech...
what... 200-2000-1000000 +/- of Ardat-Yakshi
an Asari population of ? billions galaxy wide after finding the prothean tech and their discovery they can mate with other species...
lol i'm not going to try to estimate this
