Mass Effect 2 (2010)

Mass Effect 2 (2010)

PhysX Error message on startup?
I reinstalled the game today in hopes of going back and replaying it, but before it even loaded anything, a message saying "Failed to initialize the physics system. Please ensure you have an updated version of the PhysX System Software installed."

So I googled it and tried to find a solution, and a lot of people said to go into the common/Mass Effect 2/redist folder and use the "physX_0.09.0814_SystemSoftware" file to fix it, but when I did that, it said i had a more recent and updated version of it and aborted the installation.

I don't have an NVIDIA graphics card or driver or anything (I have AMD..i'm not the most tech savy person so idk what exactly the PhysX thing would fall under here so forgive me), and I've played this game on here before multiple times, so I don't really know what's going on with it

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and pardon me for my lack of tech savy-ness lol

First , did you verify game cache?
Restart steam since install?
If you have done bot of those then this link should help.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.12.1031-legacy-driver.html
It will just ADD that file into your existing drivers folder, not change them or roll them back.

i did all 3 of those things, but it still gives me the error. I'll try the verify and restart again just to be sure though.

Is your AMD graphics driver(s) up-to-date? Normally running the file in the redist folder corrects the issue...

Yeah I have the same issue on the origin version of ME3 and it just sucks to think everything you do will probably break something important even if you watch tutorials on youtube or something.

Installing drivers and deleting them just scares me personally for multiple reasons like if I install a older version would it effect other games that isn't Mass Effect. I dont know why they release such broken ports on multiple PC platforms even when the franchise is huge, anyway sorry for ranting but I feel your pain. So if you can, just buy the console versions so you don't have all this BS to deal with.

There's only so much help when it comes to ports and games on sites like Youtube and even Steam but by now, I hope you have found a way past this.

If you are scared to install the Legacy Driver plugin as is linked above then let me try to explain. First, the file is just a PLUGIN and in no way chages your existing drivers, and in no way interferes with any future drivers install. It is a simple file to make physx work with older games period!!!!!!!!
Second, it is a one time install and NEVER needs updated, and, IF you read the link page, it is intended towork with AMD drivers also.

Thank you for correcting me and all that but it didn't fix my issue (the link legacy driver) The information on the driver says it only works on games around the end of 2007. ME3 came out out long after then but I did try it.

To help out people with the same problem: i had it yesterday and read somewhere, that in the steam install is a physX-exe, you just have to start and it installs the physX the game wants, after i did that, it ran at once without any problems.

"A:\Steam\steamapps\common\Mass Effect 2\redist" is my path, then doubleclick "PhysX_9.09.0814_SystemSoftware.exe" to install it.
