I'm not so sure about that, I gave Keroppi a 2 Heart Green bug, then gave him a purple rarity 1 heart bug, and the purple rarity seemed to give WAY more friendship points than the basic green 2 heart bug.

I'm just thinking the rarity does more than the hearts. There would be absolutely no reason to have rarities, if they didn't mean anything, or have any value.
Like I stated before, giving Keroppi one of those glow bugs from the Swamp (2 hearts), is only Green rarity, and barely filled up his friendship level at all. Meanwhile, giving him a purple bug I found (1 heart), boosted his friendship level significantly more, or whatever purple rarity thing I had that he could accept being only 1 heart, might not have been a bug, but I remember it giving a hell of a lot more friendship value than a 2 heart green rarity.
