How does multiplayer work

Hello could someone let me know how in-depth you can go into the game in multiplayer or is the multiplayer more comparable to animal crossing where you just visit each others islands and are able to collect some things. I know there are multiplayer specific quests but are you unable to do the regular quests together? I assume you cant really progress the game as a duo most of the time, you have to play solo?

tbh, thats exactly what I'd have expected considering thats basically what it is in New Horizons.

me and my homie were about to drop $120 for this game but now that we know the multiplayer is fake its time to dip.
