About the communication, yes it's hard to play without skype/mumble for the moment. I don't know what Amplitude have plan about this, but an idea could be something like the chat wheel of dota 2 mix with the pointer from Portal 2. Something to suggest common action of the game easilly.

To share items in Co-op you need to give your hero to your ally with the item or get your friend to give you there hero, this option is in the same tab that giving resources is in.
When you've done this the player with the item can put the item in question on the Hero and then give the Hero back to the player.

Backpack is your private inventory.
Inventory is the public inventory.
Click the item you'd like to share to select it, and then transfer it to the public inventory.
Now your friend who needs it takes it. If it's not needed it will just vanish when you go to the next floor.
