When a hero operates the module, that module gets a large bonus to its effect.
So for example a Major Industry module may give +3 industry on it's own, but + 13 with a hero operating it.
There seem to be two special instances: the Shop and the Emergency Generator Module.
The effect of the shop module when not operated by a hero is that it will cause a merchant you have found to leave his normal room and go to the shop. When you then have a hero operate the shop, it will also produce Dust, which it would not do without the hero.
The Emergency Generator's effect is that it will power the room. When you then have a hero operate it, it will also increase the chance you will loot dust.
Both seem to have one effect and they gain an additional effect when operated.
then there is the Mechanical Pal minor module which will increase the Wit of the operating hero OR if no hero is operating, operate the module itself.

When you move the crystal your aim is to reach the exit. You should have tried to light up as many rooms in the direction you will be running as possible. The character with the crystal will be unable to fight, so they have to run. If necessary, other characters should try to kill monsters attacking him. In the end though monsters will keep spawning until you reach the exit, so you can never just kill them all: you have to run. Heal your heroes and try to make a break for it.
They stack. The effect of additional mechanical pals is so tiny though that you truly will only be able to tell in very few situations.
