Viral is good to use at the start of your gauntlet where enemies get hit and then move to the next room and the DoT keeps ticking away on them. If they hang around the viral injector longer, it keeps shooting at the same enemey over and over doing low damage vs many other minor mod choices.
Tear gas is good in any room as it lowers the enemies def making all damage to them more effective. The DoT is low but effective vs swarms since it hits all in the room.

In almost all situations, I prefer tear/neuro rooms for melting. If you have a long series of rooms, and primarily high HP enemies, then you can potentially get more mileage out of viral injectors.
