And you want to unlock all the characters to see how specific pairs interact in the lift. You'll learn a thing or two about their individual stories.
Due to his "continuous attack" the heavy doesn't waste any damage output for example, which makes him better than Gork with his 3-shot bursts. And other than Gork, he can actually get pretty fast when having health regeneration.
The pyro is the only hero with group damage, which is very useful. He can also make your heroes basically invulnerable for a short time.
The medic is simply so much better in his skill selection than the nurse when it comes to healing, protecting and buffing the team.
And the engineer is probably the only hero who can decently defend and repair a room's modules during combat, besides being a top operator.
Each of the Rescue Team guys has a very useful talent as well. Wes gives unique bonuses while operating resource generators, for example. Zugma can carry over more dust from one level to next than an ordinary dust box can. And his "recycling" skill is also great in the beginning. And finally, taming strong monsters with Sasha turns a fast runner into a decent fighter as well.
There are some strong, specialized basic heroes as well, but not as good as these in my opinion.
