System specs: i5 4690k, 16GB RAM, RX 580 8GB Radeon version 17.12.2, Windows 10 1709 fully updated.
Any advice or info about logs to check would be appreciated.
ps. If you dont know how to allocate ram, or what it is, just do a google search.
- you have a slow hard drive, i.e. anything but an SSD.
- originally this was lower on the list but the more I mess w/ it the more I think that the very first thing you are waiting on when u start the game is cloud-sync. So ... cloud saves: do you have bad internet? cuz if so, you could experience this as steam tries to cloud-sync before/during starting the game. other things interfering w/ internet? e.g. roomates, internet security software. Do you somehow have an intense # of saves that are getting transfered every time? (look in "Documents\Dungeon of the Endless\Users\[your #]\" if there's > ~10 files in there, that could be a problem.)
- other programs are slowing it down. this could be things you know you're running (e.g. discord), but also things you don't know you're running (e.g. windows search indexer). And of course antivirus does not belong on gaming computers. At all.
- corruption of game files: verify game files thru steam. (and if you have really fast internet, or just like to uninstall/reinstall (), now is probably as good a time as any to do that.)
- also consider, in particular for the guy who says it never loads, if you have a mechanical HDD, it may be failing. Run chkdsk.
- also guy who asked about logs .. I skimmed one and don't see anything particularly helpful in there but: "Documents\Dungeon of the Endless\Temporary Files" has some diagnostic logs. shrug.
You shouldn't have to do anything w/ RAM etc. as long as you have the min recommended requirements for Win 10. Windows should manage it just fine.FWIW the fact that the game "freezes" your PC while it is loading is not a problem unto itself. That is actually normal and expected behavior for a "non-threaded UI" design , which is pretty common in games. Unless the devs go out of their way to make it not do so, it's gonna get stuttery while it loads, because it is loading as fast as possible and giving no or minimal resources to other system devices such as mouse or even display. There are misc. legitimate arguments for this design, not the least of which is "by giving 100% of resources to the loading process, the program loads as fast as possible." Also, many devs just don't believe this issue is significant enough to merit the small amount of work to fix it. Personally I decide on a case by case basis. In my case, DOTE loads fast enough (~10 seconds) that I don't mind not having it.
OTOH, the fact that your game takes that long to load ... Assuming you have a decent PC and SSD, that itself actually is indicative of a problem. For example, the stats Loftie posted, no way should that machine take that long to load, assuming SSD. (If HDD then .. all bets are off.) So yeah, consider the items listed above.
Hmmm, I wonder if it's a Unity issue? More googling and I find this rather old thread :- https://forum.unity.com/threads/launching-any-unity-game-makes-windows-hang.298349/
So, it seems older Unity versions had issues with Display Port and DX11. So I add a launch option to Dungeon of the Endless -force-d3d9 and launch. Game launches instantly, no stuttering, no mess, nothing. Should of probably thought of this sooner as I'm sure I had the same issue in Wasteland 2 (also Unity). You may note that this issue is fixed in newer versions of Unity, unfortunately the games it affects require an update to the newer versions.
TL:DR - My issue is a bug in Unity causing system stuttering when you launch any Unity game based on an older version of the engine in combination with DX11 and DisplayPort. Try forcing DX9 using the launch command -force-d3d9 .
Edit:- Wasteland 2 seems to work fine, must have been mistaken or it's been fixed. Probably the former.
F*cking Unity, man.
Hey can you explain how to create the launch option to fix the stutter? please i cant play it because of the slow down.
The slow start up can be fixed/ stuttering mess of a startup can be fixed like this (at least for me):
Find Dungeon of the Endless in your game library
Right Click and select Properties
A new window will open, click Set Launch Options
Another window will appear with a text box type the following in
-force-d3d9
click ok, click close and you should be back on your game library. Play the game as normal. Hopefully that helps.
thanks loftie! it works awesome dude one of my faves and i stopped playing it bc of this weird slow down. Thanks Bro!
THANK YOU!
No problem - enjoy being brutally murdered with even less startup time!
how the frick has this not been fixed yet?
