Also, as long as you were operating up to level 9 or 10 you should be able to just run to the exit right when you find it on the next few floors while just spamming neurostuns and pepper spray.

If you are getting worried that things are getting out of hand, though, focus on opening the doors of the rooms connected to the direct path from the Crystal to the Exit, to avoid any nasty surprises on the way out.
PS: One of my wins was after fleeing five straight levels before reaching the last floor. I was down to two remaining heroes and had enough dust to power 2/12 rooms, with no module slots in any of the six rooms I could reach, when I decided it was time to go nuclear. I picked a direction and opened all the doors that way as quickly as possible with one of my guys, while the other one stood ready at the crystal. After opening ten doors the map was flooded with aliens, but I also found the elevator. Picked up the crystal and ran for my life. The door opener got swarmed and killed but the crystal bearer made it to the elevator with 2% health left. Victory!
It's usually not clean at the end. Not as bad as this mostly, but rarely a cakewalk. Only one time have I managed to be so OP on floor 12 that I have been able to explore the entire map. It doesn't happen often, and usually you really need to find a dust vendor on floor 12 and have some stored trash gear to sell to him. Otherwise you will be dust starved and most likely dead if you don't make a run for it at some point.
Even if you aren't Dust-starved to the point of needing them, the extra Industry will come in handy when/if Elite Silic Zoners show up and start destroying your defenses.
