Helps a lot when you go into the options and turn the traction control down, by default it is on 'Full'.
There are a few other things in there to mess with to have more control and a more fun drive.

the traction control is off my options are
ABS: On
Traction control: low
Stability control: Off
Assists: Off (On if doing Drift maps)

Low isn't off. Turn TC fully off, turn assists off for drift tracks too. You should also learn to drive without ABS while you're at it.

There's also more to drifting than just throwing it into a corner and pulling the handbrake.

Also, are you using a keyboard? If you're using a controller, you wanna make sure your control settings are also optimal.

Turn off all assists and set speed steering to 0. Learn to drift on a normal track like Nordschleife or Tokyo in time trial mode. Buy the Toyota Corolla 86 and max everything except bodykits (so no downforce) and don't get Works. They weren't lying in the anime Initial D when they said the 86 trains the driver and that car makes it very easy to learn to drift. For tuning it's up to you but I'd recommend upping the tire pressure a bit, stiffening the suspension and lowering it all the way and setting the steering rack speed quite high. You'll have it in a hour and then you can move onto the drift tracks if you want. To be honest, I've always thought the drift tracks are far too slippery but drifting the proper tracks is surprisingly realistic. I've got 92 hours in this game and more than 80 of those hours were spent getting my 86 sideways around Nordschleife lol

Edit: I forgot to mention - don't use the handbrake, use the accelerator and normal brake to shift the weight of the car around to help the drift. Using the handbrake just makes your life harder...

Don't set speed steering sensitivity to 0, set it to 100%, otherwise you will get a massive delay. That setting is basically how fast you want the game to react to your inputs, 100% being closer to a 1:1 input.

The handbrake is fine for tight corners.

Don't learn in time trial mode since it uses diferent physics.

Don't learn on normal tracks, if you can't drift on the easier drift tracks then you definitely can't drift a normal track.

I know this isn't your question, but I played through the entire game to the end of the final championship without doing a single drift event. If you don't like it, you can ignore it and not miss much.

Learn to remember what the brake is for :D lol.. Does anyone still play multiplayer at all?

Good to know, thanks. Might as well skip them.
