Is it really better than BF3 and BF4

Or is it nostalgia talking? I know the newest Battlefield gets a lot of ♥♥♥♥ just because. It's has become cool to hate it like COD.
I have only played 3 and 4 and i think 4 improves everything on 3 minus some minor thing (i still prefer "kill to unlock")
IS BF2 dated? There's no way that two games can't improve and get better.

Besides, the MP must be dead-ish, right? There are two new games in the series. Who still plays it?

Nostalgia mainly. It was a great game for its time, and I had mad fun in karkand. However, player base is pretty much dead now, and teamwork with randoms sucked just as much then as it does now.

You can also get a lot of the BF2 content in BFplay4Free, which did have a player base last time I played it about a year ago.

Unless you are a dice collector, or just want to see how the series evolved, I can't honestly recommend it.

BF3 is the best battlefield. Don't let the nostalgia idiots fool you. The only thing BF3 is lacking is the destructing of Bad Company 2.

It's actually quite populated, atleast in Europe where we have alot of full 64 servers and multiple 32 ones. Don't let Steam charts sway you off the game cause retail/origin players share the same servers/client.

yes i'd say so. best map design by far, proper implementation of commander and com-rose/tac-rose and a lot of small things which are either missing since bad company 2 or done worse. graphics are dated, sure, but not that bad i just don't really like the gun play and overall i'd say its more vehicle focused. And the player base is still very active, i have no problems getting a 64player game going at any time of the day with decent ping. And forgotten hope 2 and project reality are great active mods.

Many people who played BF2 hate 3 and 4 because of how much it took from the CoD series. It has been dumbed down. The ranking system was deeper and required more time and effort. The lack of perks and weapon unlocks made the game much more skilled focused. 3 removed a lot of features like the commander system. Planes and helis had much more battlefield control before also.

I enjoyed BF3 enough to buy Premium, but I think BF2 was the best game in the series just because the maps were better. There were some great maps in both games, but BF3 has more mediocre maps.

I also really miss commander mode. I've moved on from BF3 and into Red Orchestra and Natural Selection. Both of these games have team commanders who play a vital role.

I had some great squads in BF3, but even then the game felt fairly chaotic and often lacking an overall direction for the team. Of course there were some terrible commanders in BF2, but a good one always made the match.

I'm considering buying BF2 again. These days it seems like most of the community is playing Project Reality (very healthy), but there still are several vanilla servers. It shouldn't be hard to find a game. Don't let the Steam stats fool you, as the overwhelming majority of players have the various non-Steam versions.

Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 was the best version of Battlefield, BF2 was good though, especially special forces with the grapling hooks and ziplines! BF3 could have been awesome had EA not been complete ♥♥♥♥♥ and sacked the trauma team who pretty much created Battlefield 2 and paved the way for it with the Desert Combat mod.

Having played BF2 from release, it is still my favourite of them all, but I would not buy it now, today, for being the best. I would only buy it for a trip down memory lane. It was the best of the series in it's time. It was a fun, arcadey action fps, that was as annoying as it was fun and had the potential for some epic moments. Special forces generally sucked and most people only had it to unlock guns in vanilla BF2 multiplayer.

BF2 was the first game I ever saw that was made worse with each patch released. The original release and patched 1.5 are two different games. This train has come and gone. BF3 if a better experience for the now (BF4 is just broken)

So the answer is no. This game is not better at this point in time.

I haven't played bf4 but I hated bf3, main reason is the map design. Bf2 is pretty awesome, even without destruction, it has more classes, bigger and better designed maps and a mod support, and there are some pretty awesome mods there.

For me, single-player sets Battlefield 2 apart from everything that's been released since. Everyone will argue that bots aren't as smart as real people, but I beg to differ; people are really stupid.

Not to mention, in seven years, I've never had to worry about the player-base and whether anyone was still playing. With bots, I can play anytime, any map, all the time.

And then of course there's the mods, which EA wouldn't dare allow these days.
