16 players max in single player, and you are limited in the map sizes aswell which ends up meaning you wont be able to use planes etc for majority if not all the maps in single players unless you use mods to do so.
Like some of the others said though, the mods are what make this game stand out. I definitely recommend Forgotten Hope 2, and Alpha Project. AP made it to where you can customize the attachments on your weapons. They also changed all the sounds and textures to make it much better.
If Singleplayer is your thing (or Cooperative play via LAN), visit this site (mainly it's FORUMS)...

Tons of maps, skins, weapons, and tutorials available at battlefieldsingleplayer's forums for modding this classic game and getting tons of mileage out of it. I personally have played 99% of this game offline in singleplayer and coop via LAN with friends. Why? Because when I got it I didn't have online capable internet, now that I do I play the newer games online...
BUT I *still* play BF2 offline a ton because of all the mods (which you can't use online unless everyone else has the files).
