DirectX error with BF2

I installed BF2 using a disc that I've had for a while, and used to successfully play BF2 on older computers, including a windows 8 laptop. When I try to play the game, it gives me a blank black screen. I hit Windows button+Tab, then I see an error that says BF2 needs DirectX 9.0c or better to run. I am currently using DirectX 12 on a Windows 10 computer. Anyone know a fix?

Do search the battlelog.co forums if the above doesn't solve it - this is quite a commonly posted problem and many different variations of it has been discussed there.
