Yeah, If you came for a retelling of Final Fantasy VII story, I hate to disappoint you, but they really didn't try. As of about a week ago, the Final Fantasy VII story is at Nibelheim (where you initially learn some past history of Tifa and Cloud, the Promise, and Sephiroth burning the town). Crisis Core is even worse with it being at the Island where they find out about the hidden goals of the SOLDIER Project, but Genesis hasn't arrived yet. I didn't play the First Soldier game, but I doubt they have finished that story either which is fine, I don't like the characters and the story is boring.
Aside from it being incomplete, many, many segments are cut, there isn't any free-roaming in any maps or overworld, and there technically isn't side quests unless you consider the other content of this game that which is more developed. Besides, what they do give you in story, it is told worse than the original game.
