you have to one on top and one on botton
if u have the recipe, but it with the material it needs, after that go to a place with free 2x2 squares

You can have ladders and hatches in this tunnel and the elevator will move right through.
I'm not sure what happens when you add other elevators though, haven't tried it yet.

Edit: Maybe I was wrong... on closer inspection, there were a few of my dudes whose status kept changing back and forth between "in the elevator", "waiting", and "attacking enemy". When I took control and moved them out, the elevator started workign again.. I dont know what they were trying to attack, but it seems like they were confused and causing the issue.
Agreed very much.
It would be easier to create a new elevator-system and to drop the current.
