Also there is no reason for equip them or skilling them for now. Because they are dying too fast.
There is a "gather" sort of command to make them group up.... it's a spell.... but you have to go a bazillion miles into the tech tree to get it. Why it's even in there instead of just being a simple function from the start, I dont know.

Also, about them dying too fast and frequently. It definitely isn't worth it early on to "invest" in your Dwarves. Only once you have beds for all of them, decent armor and weapons, and an "Average" rating for your comfort level would I start using skill books on them. The easier it is to keep them alive, the more beneficial it is to improve them, otherwise you're tossing those books into the grave with them.
The horn spell kind of does the trick but it just isn't quite specific enough, it only allows very simple all-or-nothing tactics. Being able to set up patrols, guard posts, and alert levels to toggle them on and off, would be very much appreciated. It wouldn't replace the need to simply muster all your forces, but it would be nice to put everyone on alert when a wave starts and have them take up positions as planned. Combat does need a bit more strategy than 'try to make the enemy spread out, then throw all your dwarves at them'.
I wonder if there's a devlog somewhere where they talk about planned features?
But I can take control over individual dwarf, or send him sleep, or eat (he don't go though).
They must be smarter anyway...
