But even if you build it with a stone bottom, water seemed to escape or maybe evaporation effect.
My pond is 12blocks wide and my roof is 11blocks wide in a diagonal line + 1 block of the hole where all the water goes down. It filled up over many many hours.
So I'd say you only need at least the same width for the rain catching system as your pond is.
