My lake is 2 blocks deep lined with stone. I didnd't want to wait for rain so I just filled it up with water myself. It took a few days for the fish to fill up; had 3. Dunno if the size of the pond/lake determines the number of fish showing up though.

Edit: My 'lake'

Make sure you use stone (and not stone wall, dirt, or any other material) for the walls and bottom of your lake. Stone is the only material that won't allow water to evaporate.

Nice! How many blocks deep underground for those angler fish to spawn?

It takes a lot of buckets to fill.

I use a diagonally build roof on the top world and a hole in the ground to let my underground pond fill up.

But even if you build it with a stone bottom, water seemed to escape or maybe evaporation effect.
My pond is 12blocks wide and my roof is 11blocks wide in a diagonal line + 1 block of the hole where all the water goes down. It filled up over many many hours.
So I'd say you only need at least the same width for the rain catching system as your pond is.

I was wondering if you could build a lake yourself. Thanks for posting this!

Answer how to make them has been posted. Either learn patience or guide more rain into the pond while filling it up.

Yes it doe's the bigger it is the more fish that will spawn in it. :3
